Brompton Road is a major retail destination, with Sloane Street to the east, Basil Street to the south, Hans Crescent to the west and two world renowned department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols at the western and eastern ends. The site, part of the Knightsbridge Estate, is located within the Hans Town Conservation Area and includes a number of Listed Buildings. Architecturally the majority of buildings encompass high quality design and materials, especially with regard to the facades of the upper floors, which include a palette of brick, stone and terracotta. However, a number of shopfronts do not reflect this quality and detract visually from the appearance of the host buildings’ upper floors and the conservation area generally. A change in lease brought the opportunity to improve the retail frontage of this particular building and to provide accommodation suitable for a high profile retailer in keeping with the areas international status.
The brief was to enhance the visual appearance of the site through incorporating high quality design and materials, but at the same time provide modern retail space suitable for the tenant and renovated residential space in keeping with the area. A complete new structure encompassing floors and lifts was built behind the retained facade. The two existing retail units were combined and a basement constructed to provide “Watches of Switzerland” with over 890 sqm of space.
